Gifts for Paul McCartney Fans, From Under $25 to Collector Level
Real, buyable gifts for Macca fans in 2026: The Boys of Dungeon Lane, The Lyrics paperback, the Wings oral history, half-speed Wings LPs, a songbook for bassists and a Hofner violin bass.
2026 is a good year to buy for a Paul McCartney fan: The Boys of Dungeon Lane came out on May 29, the Man on the Run soundtrack on February 27, the Wings oral history book in November 2025 and the Wings anthology on November 7, 2025. Gifts on this list start at about $12 for a picture book and go up to about $450 for a real Hofner violin bass, with most of the best choices between $20 and $50.
We run a 100,000-member fan group, and every December the same question comes up: "What do I buy for someone who already owns everything?" This list is our answer. Everything here is an officially released product that you can buy new, prices are approximate US street prices, and the picks cover readers, listeners, players and collectors.
If the person you are buying for loves the Beatles as much as Paul, see our list of Beatles gifts under $50 as well.
Top 10 for 2026
Hey Grandude! (Picture Book)
Paul's 2019 children's picture book, illustrated by Kathryn Durst, follows a globe-trotting grandfather and his grandchildren on adventures powered by a magic compass. Many fans in our group are now grandparents themselves, and reading Paul's story to a grandchild is a direct way to pass the music down. At about $12 in hardcover it is the cheapest item here. A sequel, Grandude's Green Submarine, followed in 2021 if they already have the first.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane (CD)
Paul's twentieth solo studio album, released May 29, 2026 on Capitol and co-produced with Andrew Watt from sessions going back to 2021, is the obvious gift of the year for anyone who has not picked it up yet. The standard CD sells for about $20. The 14 tracks include the lead single Days We Left Behind, released on March 26, 2026, and Home to Us, a duet with Ringo Starr. Vinyl editions cost roughly twice as much if the fan in your life has a turntable. Read our full review of The Boys of Dungeon Lane before you choose a format.
Paul McCartney Bass Play-Along, Volume 43
For the fan who plays bass, this Hal Leonard book includes tab and online play-along audio for nine songs: Band on the Run, Hey Bulldog, I Want You (She's So Heavy), Live and Let Die, Maybe I'm Amazed, Penny Lane, Rain, Silly Love Songs and With a Little Help from My Friends. The audio runs through Hal Leonard's Playback+ player, which slows tracks down without changing pitch and can loop a tricky bar, so the Rain and Hey Bulldog lines become learnable. At about $25 it pairs well with a set of flatwound strings for anyone playing a violin bass.
One Hand Clapping (2CD)
Recorded live in the studio at Abbey Road in August 1974 by Paul, Linda, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton, and finally released on June 14, 2024, One Hand Clapping had been a favorite bootleg for decades. The official 2CD is about $25, and the 180g 2LP is the upgrade for vinyl fans. It captures the Band on the Run-era Wings as a tight working band, playing Jet, Soily, Let Me Roll It and a handful of oldies, with Britton's short tenure on drums documented better here than anywhere else.
The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present (Paperback)
The 2021 hardcover set, edited and introduced by Paul Muldoon, pairs the words of 154 songs with Paul's own commentary on how each was written, plus drafts, photos and memorabilia. The one-volume paperback, published on November 7, 2023, runs to 624 pages and adds seven new song commentaries, bringing the total to 161, so even owners of the hardcover have a reason to want it. It is the closest thing we have to a memoir, arranged alphabetically so it reads well in short dips. Our review of The Lyrics goes deeper into both editions.
Man on the Run Soundtrack (LP)
Released on February 27, 2026 alongside Morgan Neville's Prime Video documentary about Paul's 1970s, the soundtrack has 12 tracks drawn from McCartney, Ram, Red Rose Speedway, the Wings catalogue and more. Three are previously unreleased: Gotta Sing Gotta Dance from the 1973 James Paul McCartney TV special, the Rockshow film version of Live and Let Die, and a rough mix of Arrow Through Me from the Back to the Egg sessions. It is out on CD and black vinyl, with an orange vinyl variant sold by Amazon. Expect about $32 for the standard LP.
Venus and Mars 50th Anniversary Half-Speed Master LP
Released on March 21, 2025, this half-speed master was cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road from a high-resolution transfer of the original 1975 tapes. It recreates the original package: the Hipgnosis gatefold, the round title sticker, the planets bookmark sticker, and two posters with photography by Aubrey Powell and Sylvia de Swaan. At about $40 it sits in the middle of the budget and suits anyone who owns a worn 1975 copy.
Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run
Published in November 2025 by Liveright in the US and Allen Lane in the UK, this 550-page oral history is credited to Paul McCartney and edited by the historian Ted Widmer. It tells the Wings story from 1971 to the band's end in the voices of Paul, family and band members, with many previously unpublished photographs. For a fan who has read the older biographies, the value is having Paul's, the band's and the family's accounts of the decade side by side in one volume. Expect to pay about $40 to $50 for the hardcover.
Wings (2025) Limited Edition Colour 3LP
The 32-track Wings anthology from November 7, 2025, curated by Paul himself, on translucent clear, green and pink 180g vinyl in a die-cut hardback slipcase designed by Paul and Aubrey 'Po' Powell of Hipgnosis. It adds two posters, a sticker sheet, a litho print and an expanded booklet with Po's album-by-album artwork notes, extra editorial by Pete Paphides and band portraits by Humphrey Ocean. The official US store listed it at $114.98, with the black vinyl version cheaper and the 2CD far cheaper still.
Hofner Ignition Pro Violin Bass
The collector-level gift for a player. The Ignition Pro (HI-BB-PE) is Hofner's most affordable way to get the violin bass shape Paul has played since 1961, with a fully hollow body and a short 30-inch scale, and it typically sells for about $450. Hofner entered insolvency in December 2025; GEWA music took over the operational business from April 1, 2026, and production of the German-made 500/1 continues in Baiersdorf. Our violin bass buying guide compares it with cheaper and pricier options.
How We Chose These Gifts
Every gift on this list is an official release or a current product from an established maker, and every one is available new in 2026. We skipped anything we could not verify, anything sold only secondhand at collector prices, and merchandise using official photographs where we could not confirm a licence.
We also tried to match gifts to different kinds of fans. Some members of our group want the newest album the day it comes out. Others collect books, play in tribute bands or care mostly about vinyl. So the list covers music, reading, playing and display, and it runs from about $12 to about $450.
Prices are approximate street prices in US dollars at the time of writing. Records and books go on sale often, especially in November, so treat the numbers as a guide rather than a promise.
Match the Gift to the Fan
For the fan who loves the 1970s, the Wings material is the strongest area right now. The Wings oral history book, the Man on the Run soundtrack and One Hand Clapping cover the same decade from three angles: the band's own account, the film's selection of recordings, and a live-in-the-studio snapshot from 1974. Together they make a themed bundle for a little over $100.
For the reader, The Lyrics paperback is the safest choice, because almost every fan wants it and many only own the expensive hardcover or nothing at all. If they already have it, the Wings book is the natural next step. Our full list of the best books about Paul McCartney has more ideas, including Allan Kozinn and Adrian Sinclair's multi-volume The McCartney Legacy.
For the musician, a songbook or a bass is the gift they will actually use. The Bass Play-Along book is a low-risk choice at about $25. A Hofner is a bigger decision: check whether they play left-handed like Paul or right-handed like most fans, and whether they already own a short-scale bass, before you commit.
Vinyl, CD or Book: Which Makes the Better Gift?
Vinyl looks and feels like a gift, and for many fans it is the preferred format. The catch is that you need to know they own a working turntable. If they do not, a CD or book is kinder than a record they cannot play.
CD is the underrated choice. The Boys of Dungeon Lane CD is about $20 and One Hand Clapping on 2CD is about $25, which leaves room in the budget for a second gift. Many older fans in our group still play CDs in the car and in the kitchen every day.
Books reward serious fans for longest. They are read slowly, argued about in the group and kept for years. If you are torn between two records, a book the fan is unlikely to buy for themselves, such as the Wings oral history, is often the safer pick.
When to Buy and What to Avoid
Buy early for Christmas. Limited vinyl variants and exclusive editions sell out in October and November, and they rarely come back at the same price. The standard editions stay in stock, so if you miss a variant, the standard version is still a perfectly good gift.
Avoid unofficial pressings and bootleg DVDs sold as if they were official. At the time of writing, we could not find an official physical release of the Man on the Run documentary itself, so treat any DVD or Blu-ray of the film on marketplaces with caution.
Also be careful with autographed items. Signed memorabilia is a specialist area with many fakes. Read our guide on spotting fake autographs before spending real money.
